‘일상의 편린片鱗들로 엮어내는 관계의 미학’
최근까지 이어지는 내 작업의 화두話頭다.
최근 몇 년간의 작업을 되돌아보면, 내 작업의 흐름은 시공간의 초월적 의지를 담았던 <미인도의 재해석>으로부터 치유의 기원을 담은 <달빛 소나무>를 거쳐, 상선약수上善若水[최고의 선은 마치 물과 같다], 그리고 요즘의 테마인 <우리는 별을 본다>로 이어지고 있다. <우리는 별을 본다>는 주제의 작업은 끝없이 펼쳐진 어두운 밤하늘에 주목한 작품들이다. 과학적 설명이 없다면 그 끝을 이해할 수 없는 아주 오래되고 깊디깊은 우주, 그 흐릿한 어둠에 존재하는 온갖 것들. 끝없이 흩어져 있는 무명의 반짝이는 별들과 나름의 중력을 가진 항성들, 밤의 하늘이 어둡지만 않다는 증거는 별과 달, 그리고 온갖 천체들이 뿜어내는 빛들이 보내는 밤하늘의 신호 때문일 것이다. 이런 신호들이 우리의 눈을, 우리의 마음과 상상을 하늘로 향하게 한다. 다시 한번 과학적 성과에 의지해서 말하면, 우주를 수놓는 별들은 항성들 사이에 일정한 중력을 유지해야 영원성의 순환 고리가 흐트러지지 않을 것이다.
밤하늘에 무질서하게 펼쳐진 듯 보이는 별들의 관계가 우주의 영원성을 지탱하는 힘이며, 이것은 엄밀히 말하면 관계의 힘이라 생각한다. 관계, 관계의 힘, 관계성이 요즘 밤하늘에 주목하는 나의 예술 주제이다. 그런 의미에서 작품 속에서 자못 산만하게 보이는 소재들은 자연과 우주 속에 존재하는 온갖 물상들의 관계, 그리고 이 세계에 존재하는 나와, 또 다른 각각의 나들의 관계성을 드러내는 표현 소재들이다. 이런 주제의 흐름은 요즘에 꿈꾸는 듯 한 감정으로 화면에 그려 넣은 <마릴린 먼로>를 통해 재해석되듯이, 얼마 전까지 시공간의 차원을 넘나들었던 <미인도의 재해석>에 맞닿아 있기도 하다. 짙푸른 배경을 가르고 희디흰 포말을 뿜어대며 쏟아지는 폭포 물줄기, 어두운 하늘을 등진 채 빛나는 달과 별들, 달빛을 받아 금빛 은빛을 띠며 우뚝 선 소나무들, 소나무 아래 자리한 미인, 그리고 <월하탄금月下彈琴>에서 자태를 뽐내는 소나무는 달빛에 빚진 결과가 아닐까? 이 모두는 관계 속에서 서로를 빛나게 하는 존재들이 아닐까?
내 작품 속에 펼쳐져 있는 이러한 주제들은 상상 의식이 표상해 낸 관계적 이미지들이다. 관계성 속에서 시공간은 쉽게 해체되곤 한다. 상상 속에서는 과거와 현재, 그리고 이곳과 저곳, 가시적인 것과 비가시적인 이미지들의 차이와 구별이 무의미해지기 때문이다. 그래서인지 나의 심미 상상 속에서는 과거가 현재를 기웃거리기도 하고, 현재에 과거가 담겨 있기도 하다. 과거는 시간의 축적일뿐 오늘에 무소용이 아니며, 현재가 과거에 비해 우월한 것도 아니다. 그리고 우주를 꿈꾸는 이들에게 이 세계는 상상을 위축시키는 좁디좁은 장소일 뿐이다. 그들이 무한을 이야기하기에 이 세계는 너무 협소하다. 예술가는 그 협소한 공간에서 무한을 꿈꾸듯 상상하는 존재이다. 상상의 세계에나 존재할 듯한 고운 한복을 차려입은 현대의 미인들, 그리고 미인도의 재해석이라는 주제의 연장선에 있는 한복 입은 마릴린먼로의 초상은 미적 욕망의 대상이면서, 나에게 예술적 상상의 세계를 확장시켜 가는 심미 표상들이라 할 것이다.
<작업노트_달과 소나무>
어릴적 목포 친정집 마당 한구석에는 ‘희말라야시다’라는 외래종 소나무가 한그루가 있었다.
아랫집에 솔잎이 떨어진다는 민원때문에 수년동안 잦은 가지치기를 해서 소나무의 수형이 앉
아서 쉬거나 누워있기 좋게 적당히 구부러진 모양이 되었다.
나랑 동생들은 소나무 둥치에 올라가 꼭데기에 있는 비둘기 집에 알이 몇개라는 둥…멀리 아
버지 오토바이 타고 오시는 모습이 보인다는 둥, 영산강 하구둑의 수문이 몇개 열렸다는 둥…
무용담을 늘어놓기 바빴다. 가족의 수호신 같았고 놀이터 같았던 소나무는 내 어릴적 친정의
기억에서 빼놓을 수 없는 상징적 존재이다.
고교시절에는 공부 멀쩡히 잘 하다가 2학년 2학기 즈음에 갑자기 미술을 전공하겠다고 선포
를 해서 집안을 발칵 뒤집어놓고 부모님의 반대를 무릎쓰고 밤 늦게까지 미술학원에서 그림그
리다 늦은 밤 귀가하기 일쑤였다. 우리집은 유달산 밑 높은 지대 중에서도 골목 끝자락에 자
리한 소나무가 보이는 기와집이었는데 입구에 다다르면 밤하늘을 올려다보며 하나님, 부처
님…온갖 신을 다 부르며 제발 홍대에 합격하게 해달라고…소원 안들어주면 무슨일을 저지를
지 모른다며 애꿎은 달을 보고 협박과 회유를 반복하곤 했었다.
지금 생각해보니 원형소나무에 그려넣은 달소나무는 그때의 간절했던 목표와 기원이 어우러진
내 마음속 소망의 상징이 아닐까싶다.
소원하던 대학에 합격했고…열심히 살았고…어느새 기억에서 멀어진 친정집의 그소나무를 도
시의 곳곳에서 발견한다. 그리고 어느새 내 그림속에 들어앉아있는 소나무들을 바라보며 나
는 도대체 왜 이들을 둥그런 혹은 네모진 화판에 모셔놓고 있는지 생각해본다.
아마도 유년의 기억속에 혹은 내 무의식 속에 단단히 자리잡고 있던 내 의지처같았던 존재를
기도처럼 그림으로 풀어내고 있는 건 아닌가싶다.
내가 주로 그리는 내 자화상같은 인물의 정갈한 선묘를 풀어내기 전에, 혹은 마음이 복잡할
때 수행하듯 기도하듯 솔잎을 반복해서 쌓아 올리고 있는 내자신을 발견한다.
깊은 산 골짜기의 낙락장송이 아닌 도시에서 간신히 버티고 견뎌내는 그 모습이 내 모습같기
도하고 오르막 내리막을 반복하지만 결국에는 치고올라가는 우리들의 인생길 같기도 하고…어
릴적 친정집 마당 한구석에서 우리 오누이를 업어기르던 그소나무 같기도하다.
어느날 태풍에 스러져 고사해버린 소나무에대한 그리움이 더해서인가 유독 마음리 복잡하고
심란한 날에는 어김없이 붓을 들어 달덩이같이 둥그런 화판에 그 형상을 붙잡고 있다.

“어느새 기억에서 멀어진 친정집의 그소나무를 도시의 곳곳에서 발견한다. 그리고 어느새 내
그림속에 들어앉아있는 소나무들을 바라보며 나는 도대체 왜 이들을 둥그런 혹은 네모진 화판
에 모셔놓고 있는지 생각해본다.” _ 작가노트
현대란 곧 도시적 삶이다. 현대인이 만나는 소나무는 거의 언제나 수많은 빌딩과 주택과 거리
의 풍경을 동반한다. 황혼녘. 달빛은 그대로인데 언덕 위 집앞 그때 그 소나무는 어디로 갔을
까. 달이 뜨면 슬며시 그리움과 회상이 고개를 든다. 오래전 달의 바다처럼 잔잔하지만 솟구
치는 소나무 같은 강렬한 기억이 깊은 상처자국으로 남아 있다. 사람들은 기억하고 있을까?
노을이 지면 달과 소나무는 작가의 마음 깊은 곳에 짙은 긴 그림자를 새기고 신기루처럼 뿌리
를 내린다. 작가는 화가의 길에 들어서고 또 오랜 시간 깊은 사념의 바다를 건넜다.
우리의 평균적 일생이란 쾌락 보다는 고통에 가깝다. 사람들은 쾌락보다는 고통이 진실에 가
깝다는 것을 잘 알고 있다. 화가들에게 오랜 화업을 견디는 것은 이와 같다. 리얼한 세계, 진
실한 생활의 발견이란 약간의 쾌감과 거의 대부분을 차지하는 고통으로 이루어진다. 우리의
내면을 고통과 쾌감으로 채우고 비웠던 성장판처럼. 아이에서 어른으로 넘어가는 청소년기란
내일을 꿈꾸며 소나무 껍질처럼 깊은 상처와 치유가 반복되던 시절이었다. 온몸을 뒤틀어야만
견딜 수 있는 시간들. 달과 소나무는 너는 그 시간들을 어떻게 견뎠느냐 묻는다. 힘든 시기를
위안하고 격려한다.
언젠가 유명한 가수가 노래를 불렀다. “달이 차오른다, 가자!” 초승달이 반달이 되고 반달이
보름달이 되듯 조각달이 둥근달이 되면 우리 마음에는 무언가 형용할 수 없는 떨림과 파장이
일어나고 정서적 분위기로 가득 찬다. 태양을 도는 지구와 달의 자전과 공전의 운행이라는 우
주쇼 만으로는 설명하기 어려운 심미적 공전과 자전이 일어난다. 시간을 초월해 인상, 감정,
예민한 감각이 생생하게 살아난다. 우리는 부분부분, 조각조각, 일상에 매달리다가도 한순간
마술처럼 전체를 경험한다. 풍경이 그림이 되고 그림이 시가 된다.
달이 완전해지는 시간. 집 앞에 소나무 한 그루가 서 있다. 달을 배경으로 소나무가 춤을 춘
다. 소나무는 뒤틀고 뒤집고 뻐쳤다가도 움추렸다. 표면에 소나무를 양각한 듯, 온몸으로 꿈틀
거리며 가지 뻗는 소나무를 달은 품고 있다. 달빛은 금빛과 은빛으로 소나무를 채색한다. 달
과 함께 소나무는 뜨고 지고 빛을 뿜는다. 소나무 껍질은 단지 물리적 표면이 아니다. 그것은
어떤 고통과 상처의 은유, 심미적 도약의 흔적이다. 곱추처럼 온몸이 뒤틀린 소나무의 춤은
우리를 깊은 황홀경으로 이끈다.
이동연 작가는 본래 채색화와 인물화로 잘 알려져 있다. 작가는 여성을 주제로한 한국화의 새
로운 영역을 개척한 작가로 밀레니엄을 전후로 인물화 특히 미인도 연작은 오랫동안 이어졌고
후배 한국화가들의 인물화 붐을 이끈 선구적 역할을 했다고 평가 받는다. 작가는 다양한 시대
의 군상을 또 우리가 인식하는 대중의 스타들과 역사 속 인물들을 아름답고 수려하게 표현하
는 작업으로 일가를 이루었다. 이번 전시에는 달과 소나무 그림이 주를 이룬다. 많은 작가들
이 달과 소나무를 그려왔다. 전통회화에서는 더더욱 많이 다뤄왔다. 땅거위 지는 언덕 위 달
과 소나무는 익숙한 풍경이지만 결코 지루하지도 불편하지도 않은 그런 씬이다. 사람의 마음
을 거울처럼 담아내기에 결코 외면의 형상으로 머물지 않는다. 달과 소나무 연작은 작가 내면
의 풍경이다. 작가는 매일 매순간 누군가의 딸이고 아내이고 어머니이자 화가의 시간을 살고
있다.
